![]() Dr. Mark A. Benvenuto Dr. Mark Benvenuto, chair professor of the University of Detroit Mercy Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, is pleased to offer non-destructive analysis of coins to determine their authenticity using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) by way of a Kevex Spectrace QuanX EDXRF instrument. This instrument uses a rhodium target X-ray tube that can be directed to irradiate coins which may be questioned as to their authenticity. Testing of a coin with various intensities of X-rays produces X-ray fluorescence in atoms up to 100 microns deep into the coins surface. The procedure leaves no marks and in no way alters the coin.
About the Kevex Spectrace QuanX EDXRF instrument: Purchased in 1999, the Spectrace QuanX energy dispersive X-ray fluorimeter provides rapid analysis of solid and liquid samples for elements heavier than sodium. Dr. Benvenuto and research assistants are currently using the instrument to analyze the metal content of coins and artifact analysis, as well as analysis of soil and water samples associated with mining operations. Please contact Dr. Benvenuto for fee and scheduling. (313) 993-1184 or by e-mail benvenma@udmercy.edu A nominal fee will be assessed as a donation to the University for the use of the equipment, which is grant based. |
